Here’s a list of the ten books (or book series) we talked about in this episode:
Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney
My Great-Aunt Arizona by Gloria Houston, illus. Susan Conde Lamb
Summer Story by Jill Barklem (part of the delightful Brambly Hedge series)
When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant, illus. Diane Goode
The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton
(also mentioned: Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel)My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett, illus. Ruth Chrisman Gannet
Fairy Tales by Berlie Doherty, illus. Jane Ray (longer stories for children with longer attention spans)
Love Comes Softly series and When Calls the Heart series by Janette Oke (ages 10 and up)
Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace (first four books for all ages; books 5-10 for ages 12 and up)
Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery (ages 8 and up)
With the exception of the Janette Oke books, which Jane read on her own, I have read all of these books aloud to my family, most of them multiple times. We’re big believers in reading aloud. Kids can comprehend books that you read to them long before they’re able to read them on their own. So pull out the fairy tales, snuggle up on the sofa, and enjoy a story or two! —KCI
